The 95-mile primitive Magruder Road winds through a vast undeveloped area, offering solitude and pristine beauty, as well as expansive views of the Bitterroot and Clearwater Mountains in western Montana. It has been known as the southern Nez Perce trail, Elk City, Idaho to Darby, Montana Road, and the Parker Trail. The present road does not exactly trace the historic southern Nez Perce trail. Named for an early merchant who was robbed and murdered in the vicinity, it meanders adjacent to stream valleys and twists and turns up and down steep mountain ridges in Montana and Idaho.

The road enables a traveler to drive along a corridor between wilderness areas nearly twice as large as the combined states of Delaware and Rhode Island. To the north is the 1.2 million acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and to the south he 2.2 million acre Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. These areas comprise over 11% of the Congressionally established wilderness area in the 48 contiguous states.

This is probably one of the wildest roads in the United States. Its unspoiled beauty cannot be surpassed, as the landscape is much the same as when the Nez Perce and early travelers crossed the area and the road is much the same as when it was constructed.

This wilderness adventure offers an exhilarating experience. Absorb the solitude, and enjoy the remoteness far from the hassles of crowded highways. This can be called the "Magruder Challenge," as it is one of the most rugged and beautiful places in the country accessible by motor vehicle. Knowledge of the rich forest history can add greatly to a visitor's experience.
